Development and Empirical Study of Personal Archiving Self-Efficacy Scale

Abstract

Personal archiving self-efficacy refers to people’s belief in their abilities or skills to perform personal archiving. Developing a robust self-efficacy scale to measure the main dimensions,levels and influencing factors of personal archiving self-efficacy can shed light on improving the efficiency of personal archiving. Based on the relevant studies and the authors’ previous research results,this paper presents a Personal Archiving Self-Efficacy Measurement Scale （PASES）. The optimized and revised scale has good reliability and validity,and can be used as a tool to measure personal archiving self-efficacy. Therefore,a survey is conducted in Kunming city to evaluate the personal archiving self-efficacy of the public. The study finds that the respondents’ overall personal archiving self-efficacy is at a moderate level （M=4.659）. It also shows that the personal archiving self-efficacy of women is stronger than that of men;the self-efficacy of the middle-aged group is the strongest and gradually decreases with increasing or decreasing age;the higher the level of education,the stronger the self-efficacy;the self-efficacy of those who have the habit of personal archiving,experience of searching and using the files in the archives,and have received archival education or training is significantly higher than that of those who do not have the above experiences. It is suggested that personal archiving abilities should be improved by providing archival literacy education,developing relevant guidelines and tools,and creating a platform for exchange.
